100 Years of History....
Since 1915, the Sgarlata family has been a part of Schenectady’s restaurant and catering community. Nearly 100 years ago, Angelo Sgarlata, immigrated to America from Sicily and joined his brother who owned and operated a restaurant on lower Broadway in Schenectady. In the 1930’s Angelo’s family had an opportunity to buy a building across the street opened their own restaurant- Subway Grill & Restaurant.
On the same street the restaurant was located, was an entrance into the GE property. This gate was known as the subway entrance. This was the way thousands of people from the surrounding neighborhoods would get to work. There was a total of 12 different eating and drinking establishments located on lower Broadway, which was nick-named Kruzy Ave.
1950’s on
Angelo’s son Carmen, joined him in his restaurant back in the 1950’s. Carmen had graduated from college and was working for a bank hoping to some day become branch manager when Angelo became ill. Carmen left the bank to run the family business and never looked back. Angelo’s wife who was working for General Electric at the time left and joined him in the business as well.
In 1965 Carmen bought a vacant building next door to Sgarlata’s and built a banquet room that accommodate up to 140 people. It was one of the first banquet rooms in the city of Schenectady.
Angelo (Skip), Carmen’s son came on board in the 1970’s to help manage the growing business.
In the early 1980’s Sgarlata’s commenced it’s off premise catering service which grew to be one of the largest parts of the business. Our family has had the privilege to cater at Canfield Casino, Great Escape, The Mohegan Steamship boat on Lake George and Howe Caverns. The Sgarlata family has catered off premise events for groups up to 1,200 people.
Skip’s son, Jason became the first truly trained college chef , graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in 1977. Although professionally trained, Jason always said that he learned more from his grandma than he did from school. Jason began a fourth generation of the family run business.
