Since 1915, the Sgarlata family has been a part of Schenectady’s restaurant and catering community. Nearly 100 years ago, my Grandfather, Angelo Sgarlata, came over from Sicily and joined his brother who owned and operated a restaurant on lower Broadway in Schenectady. In the 1930’s my grandfather had an opportunity to buy a building across the street and he and my grandmother opened their own restaurant which they called Subway Grill & Restaurant.

The restaurant was located at the end of the street was an entrance into the GE property. This gate was known as the subway entrance. This was the way thousands of people from the surrounding neighborhoods would get to work. There was a total of 12 different eating and drinking establishments located on lower Broadway. The street was nick named Kruzy Ave.
